Alyeska Resort
Girdwood, AK
June 20-24, 2009

The 2009 Rocky Mountain Neurosurgical Society meeting will be held at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska from June 20 through June 24, 2009. The resort is set in pristine wilderness at the base of Mount Alyeska in the Chugach mountain range about a one hour drive south from the Anchorage Ted Stevens International Airport (see directions below).

The Alyeska area is an outdoor paradise. Fishing, hiking, mountain biking and glacier-viewing are easily arranged. Other outdoor activities are available, too. The days are long and the nights are short since this will be time of the summer solstice.

Directions from the Anchorage Airport to the Alyeska Resort. Depart Ted Stevens International Airport Anchorage from the rental car stations, most of which are adjacent to the airport, on International Airport Road heading east.  Stay on International Airport Road for 2 miles and turn right (south) onto Minnesota Drive.  The sign to turn off onto Minnesota Drive also indicates “to Seward Highway.”   Stay on Minnesota Drive for 5 miles.  Be aware that Minnesota Drive becomes O’Malley Road imperceptibly somewhere along its course.  From O’Malley Road, turn right onto Seward Highway heading south.  Stay on the Seward Highway for about 30 miles.  It’s a two lane highway along the coast of the Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet, so be cautious of oncoming traffic.  Occasionally, mountain goats will appear on the cliffs to your left.  A few miles past the village of Indian Creek, look for a Tesoro service station on the left and turn left onto Alyeska Highway–it’s more of a country road than a highway.  Stay on the “highway” for 3 miles.  You will come to a “T” in the road and turn left onto Alberg Avenue.  After one mile, Alberg Ave. leads directly into the Alyeska Resort parking lot and hotel entrance.  The distance from Ted Stevens International Airport to the Alyeska Resort is 41 miles, and the time is about one hour depending on traffic, etc.

If you arrive in Anchorage late in the evening or for some other reason want to stay at a hotel near the airport before venturing to Alyeska, there is a Millennium Hotel near the airport.  To drive to the Millennium Hotel as you leave the airport on International Airport Road begin to look for Spenard Road and turn left.  The Millennium Hotel is less than a mile on your left.  It has a nice restaurant and separate bar and both look out onto Lake Spenard where float planes regularly take off and land.  There are some of the other usual hotel chains in the airport area, too.  In downtown Anchorage, which is a few miles east and north of the airport, is the Captain Cook Hotel which is first class and has the ambiance of an old sailing vessel.
Hope to see you in Alaska!
