THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEUROSURGICAL SOCIETY, INC.
Jointly Sponsored by
AANSPresident Michael Brown, MD welcomed members and guests to the 46th Annual
Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Neurosurgical Society, jointly sponsored by the AANS,
in Taos, NM, June 18-22, 2011. Dr. Paul Elliott did a superb job with his arrangements
for us at EI Monte Sagrado, located in northern New Mexico in a high mesa valley next
to the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. Dr. Brett Dietz was our Scientific
Program Chairman and prepared a stimulating scientific program. Our Honored
Guests: Dr. Fredirick Boop, from Semmes-Murphey Neurologic & Spine Institute in
Memphis, TN, presented Molecular Profiling of Medulloblastoma as well as discussed
functional neuroimaging with regard to surgical planning. Dr. Robert Rostomily, from
the University of Washington Medical Center, presented Decision Making in Acoustic
Neuromas and also discussed stem cell research.

The general scientific program, once again, offered a broad spectrum of neurosurgical
topics in an atmosphere that stimulated and encouraged open and friendly discussion.
This opportunity for unencumbered collegial discussions and the sharing of individual
clinical experiences remains one of the highlights and major attractions of the RMNS
annual meeting. Our social events calendar was also attended with enthusiasm.

This year the first place Resident Awards were given to Dr. Charles V. Hatchette for his
presentation on Natural History of Low-Grade Vertebral Artery Injuries, and Dr. John B.
McGowan for The Use of CT Angiography and CT Perfusion in Management of Patients
with Steno-occlusive disease and Vasospasm . The Academy Cup, presented annually to
the best paper by a member of the society, went to Dr. Stewart Levy, for his fantastic
paper on how Interrupted Pharmacologic Thromboprophylaxis Increases Venous
Thromboembolism in Traumatic Brain Injury.

This year attendees also enjoyed a tremendous southwest pueblo experience around
Taos. It was warm and dry during the day and evenings were pleasant for outdoor dining.
Rather relaxed and uncrowded, many enjoyed shopping at the nearby plaza.

held June 16-21, 2012 at The Fairmont Kea Lani, in Maui, Hawaii. Dr. Stewart Levy is
serving as the local arrangements chairperson, and is putting together an exciting array
of activities for members, guests, and their families. In Hawaiian, Kea Lani means
‘heavenly white,’ an appropriate description for this luxury seaside resort. It features a
full-service spa and salon, 24-hour fitness center, three swimming pools, a 140-foot
waterslide, four restaurants, gourmet bakery and deli, a year-round children’s program,
and boutique shopping. For avid golfers, the resort is located adjacent to
Wailea’s championship golf courses. Also, plan to visit Maui’s Haleakala National Park,
home of the world’s largest dormant volcano. Rising 10,023 feet above sea level, it last
erupted in 1790 A.D. The park also offers hiking, sightseeing, horseback riding, downhill
biking and unforgettable sunsets and sunrises.

We are pleased to announce that our president, Dr. Randy Jensen, has selected our
honored guests: Dr. Jeff Bruce, Professor of Neurological Surgery and Vice Chairman of
Academic Affairs at Columbia University, Director of the Bartoli Brain Tumor Research
Laboratory and Dr. Charles Branch is Professor and Chair of Neurosurgery at Wake
Forest University, past President of North American Spine Society, Chair of AANS/CNS
Section on Spine and Editor in Chief of The Spine Journal.

Abstracts for the annual scientific program can be submitted online at rockymountainneurosurgicalsociety.org. The
deadline for submission is February 1S, 2012. The Resident’s Award will be presented
to the outstanding paper presented by a resident, with a cash prize plus travel expenses.
Members of the society who submit an abstract are eligible for the Academy Cup,
presented each year to the best presentation by an RMNS member. Presentations
should be approximately 20 minutes, including time for questions and discussion.
Please mark your calendars and make earlv plans to attend the 2012 annual meeting.

We hope to see you in Maui!
